The development history of NDI encoder can be traced back to 2015, when it was first released by NewTek. As a leading IP video transmission technology, NDI (Network Device Interface) has undergone several important updates and expansions since its launch.
Initial Release and Early Applications
NDI was first publicly released by NewTek on September 8, 2015, and the first device using NDI, the TriCaster video switcher, was demonstrated at the IBC Broadcast Show. Each SDI input of TriCaster can provide an NDI signal, and its 4 outputs also provide 4 channels of produced NDI signals. In addition, TriCaster can receive up to 2 NDI sources from other devices, and in subsequent versions it has increased to 12 and 44.
Cooperation and Third-Party Support
In 2016, NewTek and Changsha Qianshi Electronics cooperated to develop the first generation of NDI encoders, Connect Spark, which can convert SDI/HDMI signals into NDI network streams. In the same year, other manufacturers such as Gallery Sienna also launched NDI-supported devices, including NDI signal generators and desktop scan converters for MacOS systems. VMix video switcher software and XSplit real-time streaming applications also support NDI, further expanding NDI's user base.
Technology Update and Market Expansion
At the end of 2016, NewTek launched NDI 2.0, adding features such as cross-subnet discovery services. In July 2017, NDI 3.0 was released, adding features such as multicast, NDI/HX high-compression encoding, and support for specific PTZ cameras equipped with H.264 chipsets. At the 2018 NAB Show, Microsoft added support for NDI to the Skype for Content Creators application software, further promoting the application of NDI in the field of content creation.

The latest NDI version is NDI 5.5, which supports cross-Internet transmission, provides independent audio and video streams, and NDI HX and other functions.
